The shoulder is an incredibly mobile joint, able to move in many different directions. This amazing fact is also makes the shoulder very susceptible to injury. Shoulder injuries can significantly impact your daily activities.

Proper spinal alignment and posture is critical for well functioning shoulders.

The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint is held together by numerous muscles, ligaments and tendons. Due to this there are many potential conditions that arise within the shoulder.

Conditions affecting the shoulder: bursitis, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), rotator cuff tears and strains, tendinopathies, A/C joint sprains and many more.

COMMON CAUSES OF SHOULDER PROBLEMS:

  • Poor posture/spinal alignment (in particular rounded shoulders)
  • Prolonged Sitting/inactivity
  • Repetitive Movements (painting, plastering)
  • Sporting Injuries/ trauma
  • Overuse/repetitive strain injuries
  • Poor Sleeping Positions

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF SHOULDER PAIN?

Once we have ruled out any underlying disease or problem, the most common cause of shoulder pain are mechanical in nature.

In particular, poor spinal alignment and poor posture. When the shoulder joints roll forward, this places significant stress and pressure on the joints and surrounding muscles. This causes a whole variety of dysfunction. The alignment of the neck also plays a large roll in shoulder problems.

HOW TO FIX SHOULDER PAIN:

There are two ways in which you can choose to deal with shoulder pain.

1. Continually treat the pain and symptoms as they appear:

The most common way people will treat the pain associated with the shoulder is with medications, such as; paracetamol or Ibuprofen or other ‘quick fix’ therapies.

Opting for a ‘quick fix’ approach to shoulder problems, while ignoring the underlying cause may help you feel better in the short term, however your problem is likely to return. This approach can lead to vicious cycles of pain and dysfunction and potentially lead to chronic pain.

2. Correcting the underlying cause:

Chiropractic is concerned with correcting the underlying cause of shoulder pain, which is poor posture or spinal alignment.

Let me explain…

Your body is similar to a house in many ways. If the houses foundations are ‘off’ or begin to slip, it will cause issues throughout the house. The doors will jam, the walls will crack, and the roof will leak.

You can either constantly fix all the issues that arise from having poor foundations, or you can fix the foundations to prevent future problems occurring.

The same is true with your body. However, the foundation of your body is your spinal alignment or posture. If your spinal alignment is off, or your posture is bad, it places unnecessary pressure on the joints of your spine and shoulders. This causes degeneration, muscle spasms, and irritation of the spinal nerves surrounding the neck and shoulders.

HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC HELP SHOULDER PAIN?

At Capital Chiropractic Centre we have great results treating shoulder problems for people of all ages.

Chiropractic adjustments are designed to correct your underlying spinal alignment and posture. Having correct spinal alignment takes pressure off the joints of your spine, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. This removal of pressure allows the body to heal naturally, as nature intended.

Dr Winnie Wong, utilises a variety of different chiropractic techniques, from hands on manual style adjusting (Diversified and Gonstead), to gentle low-force techniques. Depending on your needs and your body type, we will cater a treatment style to suit your body. This ensures you see the best results and start feeling better fast.

NERVOUS SYSTEM:

Correct spinal alignment takes pressure off your spine and joints, helping you feel better, but it also takes the pressure off your nervous system. The nervous system is the communication pathway between the brain and the body.

Your spine and skull are responsible for protecting this vital organ.

When your spine is not functioning well, this can have implications into how efficiently your nervous system is working. Correct spinal alignment is critical to ensure clear communication between the brain and the body.

A well functioning spine and a clear nervous system is vital for overall health and wellbeing.
