Anyone who has suffered with neck pain knows how debilitating it can be. Slight movement of the neck can be incredibly painful, especially in the acute phase. While as the condition becomes more chronic neck pain becomes more stiff, and sore with a dull ache. Limited and painful range of motion is usually present with this condition.

The neck is one of the most highly mobile structures in our body, which is why it is susceptible to injuries. There are many types of conditions that affect the neck including; whiplash, cervical torticollis, muscles and joint sprains, disc bulges and nerve compression.

Neck pain is one of the leading causes of disability in the western world, and is often closely associated with headaches.

Due to the many types of neck pain, there are many potential causes. Here are the most common causes of neck pain we see at Capital Chiropractic Centre:

  • Poor posture/spinal alignment
  • Prolonged Sitting/inactivity
  • Car Accidents (whiplash)
  • Ergonomic problems e.g. sleeping
  • Sporting Injuries and trauma
  • Overuse/ repetitive strain injuries
  • Underlying disease or pathology (rare)

Once we have ruled out any underlying disease or problem, the most common cause of neck pain is mechanical in nature. Meaning the joints of the spine are not moving as freely as they are designed to. This causes pain locally, can contribute to spinal degeneration, muscle spasms, building discs, and irritation of the nerves surrounding the neck.

Poor posture and spinal alignment are the most common cause of neck pain. Poor alignment places unnecessary pressure on the joints of the cervical (neck) spine.

There are two ways in which you can choose to deal with neck pain.

1. Continually treat the pain and symptoms as they appear:
The most common way people will treat the pain associated with the neck is with medications, such as; paracetamol or Ibuprofen or other ‘quick fix’ therapies.

Opting for a ‘quick fix’ approach to neck problems, while ignoring the underlying cause may help you feel better in the short term, however your problem is likely to return. This approach can lead to vicious cycles of pain and dysfunction and potentially lead to chronic pain.

2. Correcting the cause:
Chiropractic is concerned with correcting the underlying cause of neck pain, which is poor posture or poor spinal alignment.

Let me explain…

Your body is similar to a house in many ways. If the houses foundations are ‘off’ or begin to slip, it will cause issues throughout the house. The doors will jam, the walls will crack, and the roof will leak.

You can either constantly fix all the issues that arise from having poor foundations, or you can fix the foundations to prevent future problems occurring.

The same is true with your body. However, the foundation of your body is your spinal alignment or posture. If your spinal alignment is off, or your posture is bad, it places unnecessary pressure on the joints of your spine and body. This causes degeneration, muscle spasms, and irritation of the spinal nerves surrounding the cervical spine (neck).

At Capital Chiropractic Centre we have great results treating neck pain with people of all ages. There is good reason why it is one of the most common conditions seen by chiropractors.

Chiropractic adjustments are designed to correct your underlying spinal alignment and posture. Having correct spinal alignment takes pressure off the joints of your spine, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. This removal of pressure allows the body to heal naturally, as nature intended.

Dr Winnie Wong, utilises a variety of different chiropractic techniques, from hands on manual style adjusting (Diversified and Gonstead), to gentle low-force techniques. Depending on your needs, your body type and the type of neck pain you are suffering with, we will cater a treatment style to your body. This ensures you see the best results and start feeling better fast.

Correct spinal alignment takes pressure off your spine and joints, helping you feel better, but it also takes the pressure off your nervous system. The nervous system is the communication pathway between the brain and the body.

Your spine and skull are responsible for protecting this vital organ.

When your spine is not functioning well, this can have implications into how efficiently your nervous system is working. Correct spinal alignment is critical to ensure clear communication between the brain and the body.

A well functioning spine and a clear nervous system is vital for overall health and wellbeing.

At Capital Chiropractic Centre, our goal is to not simply ‘get rid of your pain’ but to ensure we prevent future problems from occurring. On top of correcting the underlying cause of your problem, your spinal alignment, we tailor specific rehabilitation exercises for you, give you lifestyle and ergonomic advice, as well as periodic maintenance adjustment.

The combination of these, helps you live a healthy life free of pain.

After all prevention is better than a cure.
