Tension headaches are very common in people who spend a lot of time sitting, especially those who work in front of computers. The pain often starts in the neck or base of the skull and travels around to the front of the head. Many people who report getting tension headaches say they can feel them coming on.

These headaches can be the result of previous trauma to the neck, such as whiplash, or from repetitive poor posture.

Either way, headaches have a close relationship to the cervical spine (neck).

COMMON CAUSES OF HEADACHES:

  • Poor posture (head forward of shoulders)
  • Prolonged sitting positions
  • Dehydration
  • Trauma or accidents
  • Stress
  • Dysfunction in the cervical spine
  • Underlying disease or pathology (rare)

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF HEADACHES?

As with any kind of headache it is important to rule out underlying diseases or pathology. Once this has occurred, the most common cause of tension headaches are mechanical in nature. Meaning the joints of the spine are not moving as freely as they are designed to.

In particular, the joints of the neck or cervical spine. This dysfunction causes pain locally, can contribute to spinal degeneration, muscle spasms, building discs, and irritation of the nerves surrounding the neck.

HOW TO FIX HEADACHES:

There are two ways in which you can choose to deal with headaches.

1. Continually treat the pain and symptoms as they appear:
The most common way people will treat the pain associated with headaches is with medications, such as; paracetamol, ibuprofen or other ‘quick fix’ therapies.

Opting for a ‘quick fix’ approach to headaches, while ignoring the underlying cause may help you feel better in the short term, however your problem is likely to return. This approach can lead to vicious cycles of pain and dysfunction and potentially lead to chronic and frequent bouts of headache.

2. Correcting the cause:
Chiropractic is concerned with correcting the underlying cause of headaches, which is poor posture or spinal alignment.

Let me explain…

Your body is similar to a house in many ways. If the houses foundations are ‘off’ or begin to slip, it will cause issues throughout the house. The doors will jam, the walls will crack, and the roof will leak.

You can either constantly fix all the issues that arise from having poor foundations, or you can fix the foundations to prevent future problems occurring.

The same is true with your body. However, the foundation of your body is your spinal alignment, or posture.

If your spinal alignment is off, or your posture is bad, it places unnecessary pressure on the joints of your spine. This causes degeneration, muscle spasms, and irritation of the spinal nerves surrounding the head and neck.

With headaches, a tell tale posture is when your head is forward of centre. This places significant pressure on the joints of the neck.

HOW CHIROPRACTIC HELPS PEOPLE WITH HEADACHES:

At Capital Chiropractic Centre we have great results treating headaches with people of all ages.

Chiropractic adjustments are designed to correct your underlying spinal alignment and posture. Having correct spinal alignment takes pressure off the joints of your spine, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. This removal of pressure allows the body to heal naturally, as nature intended.

Dr Winnie Wong, utilises a variety of different chiropractic techniques, from hands on manual style adjusting (Diversified and Gonstead), to gentle low-force techniques. Depending on your needs and your body type, we will cater a treatment style to suit your body. This ensures you see the best results and start feeling better fast.

NERVOUS SYSTEM:

Correct spinal alignment not takes pressure off your spine and joints, helping you feel better, but it also takes the pressure off your nervous system. The nervous system is the communication pathway between the brain and the body.

Your spine and skull are responsible for protecting this vital organ.

When your spine is not functioning well, this can have implications into how efficiently your nervous system is working. Correct spinal alignment is critical to ensure clear communication between the brain and the body.

A well functioning spine and a clear nervous system is vital for overall health and wellbeing.
