Back pain is one of the most common complaints we see as chiropractors here at Capital Chiropractic Centre. It is estimated 70%-90% of all Australians will experience an episode of back pain at some stage in their life.

Due to the varying nature of back pain, there are many potential differential diagnoses including: sciatica (numbness, tingling, and shooting pain), facet syndrome, muscle sprains, joint sprains, disc bulges and many more. HOW DOES THIS PAIN FEEL?
Often patients will describe pain with even the slightest movements, a shooting or stabbing pain down the back of the leg (sciatica), a dull ache, numbness around the area or stiffness with locked movements.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF BACK PAIN?
Once we have ruled out any underlying disease or problem, the most common cause of back pain is mechanical in nature. Meaning the joints of the spine are not moving as freely as they are designed to. This causes pain and restriction locally, can contribute to spinal degeneration, muscle spasms, building discs, and irritation of the nerves surrounding the back.
Spinal alignment and posture are critical to prevent back pain. If your posture is poor, this can place unnecessary pressure on the joints of the spine. Irritating joints, and nerves surrounding the low back.
HOW TO FIX BACK PAIN:
There are two ways in which you can choose to deal with this condition.
1. Continually treat the pain and symptoms as they appear:
The most common way people will treat the pain is with medications, such as; paracetemoll, ibuprofen or other ‘quick fix’ therapies.
Opting for a ‘quick fix’ approach to back pain, while ignoring the underlying cause may help you feel better in the short term, however your problem is likely to return. This approach can lead to vicious cycles of pain and dysfunction and potentially lead to chronic pain.
2. Correcting the underlying cause:
Chiropractic is concerned with correcting the underlying cause of back pain and sciatica, which is poor posture or spinal alignment.

Your body is similar to a house in many ways. If the houses foundations are ‘off’ or begin to slip, it will cause issues throughout the house. The doors will jam, the walls will crack, and the roof will leak.
You can either constantly fix all the issues that arise from having poor foundations, or you can fix the foundations to prevent future problems occurring.
