Headaches and migraines can be incredibly debilitating. Only those who have suffered from these conditions know how bad they can be. Often the only thing you can do when a migraine strike is to lock yourself in a dark, quiet room and try to sleep until it passes.

It is for this reason, migraines significantly affect many daily activities. Migraines are also a big reason for days off work in Australia.

Pain on one side or both sides of the head, throbbing or pulsating sensation, visual disturbances, sensitivity to light (photophobia), sensitivity to sound (phonophobia), nausea and vomiting, lightheadedness  and fatigue.

Migraines are to be taken seriously. There are potential underlying diseases or pathologies that must first be ruled out. At Capital Chiropractic Centre, this is our number 1 priority with migraines, which is why we conduct a thorough clinical history and examination.

  • Poor posture (head forward of shoulders)
  • Dysfunction in the cervical spine
  • Dehydration
  • Allergies
  • Stress
  • Sinus Issues
  • Underlying disease or pathology (rare)

Once we have ruled out any underlying disease or problem, the most common cause of migraines are mechanical in nature. Meaning the joints of the spine are not moving as freely as they are designed to, in particular the joints in the neck (cervical spine). This causes pain locally, can contribute to spinal degeneration, muscle spasms, building discs, and irritation of the nerves surrounding the neck.

The added pressure around the neck due to these postural changes, can cause tension and pressure on nerves of the head, resulting in debilitating pain.

There are two ways in which you can choose to deal with migraines.

1. Continually treat the pain and symptoms as they appear:

The most common way people will treat the pain associated with migraines is with medications, such as; paracetamol or Ibuprofen or other ‘quick fix’ therapies.

Opting for a ‘quick fix’ approach to migraines, while ignoring the underlying cause may help you feel better in the short term, however your headache is likely to return. This approach can lead to vicious cycles of pain and dysfunction and potentially lead to chronic case of headaches.

2. Correcting the cause:

Chiropractic is concerned with correcting the underlying cause of migraines, which is poor posture or spinal alignment, particularly in the neck.

Let me explain…

Your body is similar to a house in many ways. If the houses foundations are ‘off’ or begin to slip, it will cause issues throughout the house. The doors will jam, the walls will crack, and the roof will leak.

You can either constantly fix all the issues that arise from having poor foundations, or you can fix the foundations to prevent future problems occurring.

The same is true with your body. However, the foundation of your body is your spinal alignment or posture. If your spinal alignment is off, or your posture is bad, it places unnecessary pressure on the joints of your spine. This causes degeneration, muscle spasms, and irritation of the spinal nerves surrounding the head and neck.

At Capital Chiropractic Centre we have great results treating migraines with people of all ages.

Chiropractic adjustments are designed to correct your underlying spinal alignment and posture. Having correct spinal alignment takes pressure off the joints of your spine, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. This removal of pressure allows the body to heal naturally, as nature intended. Taking pressure off your head and neck.

Dr Winnie Wong, utilises a variety of different chiropractic techniques, from hands on manual style adjusting (Diversified and Gonstead), to gentle low-force techniques. Depending on your needs, your body type and the type of migraines you are suffering with, we will cater a treatment style to your body. This ensures you see the best results and start feeling better fast.

Correct spinal alignment takes pressure off your spine and joints, helping you feel better, but it also takes the pressure off your nervous system. The nervous system is the communication pathway between the brain and the body.

Your spine and skull are responsible for protecting this vital organ.

When your spine is not functioning well, this can have implications into how efficiently your nervous system is working. Correct spinal alignment is critical to ensure clear communication between the brain and the body.

A well functioning spine and a clear nervous system is vital for overall health and wellbeing.

At Capital Chiropractic Centre, our goal is to not simply ‘get rid of your pain’ but to ensure we prevent future problems from occurring. On top of correcting the underlying cause of your problem, your spinal alignment, we tailor specific rehabilitation exercises for you, give you lifestyle and ergonomic advice, as well as periodic maintenance adjustments. The combination of these, helps you live a healthy life free of pain.

After all prevention is better than a cure.
